Hamlet House FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much independence do residents have?
A: Some residents have their own car, come and go with friends and family, enjoy entertaining and have quite a bit of independence. Others need more support. It depends on the individual!

Q: Why was Hamlet House built?
A: It was built so that islanders who were experiencing health changes or limitations could remain in their own community rather than having to move to the mainland.

Q: Is the Hamlet House only for Lopez Islanders?
A: Not only residents, but many others call Hamlet House home, including aging parents of Lopezians who move to the island to be near their beloved family.

Q: What about eligibility criteria?
A: Care needs vary widely! Washington State and Hamlet House admission guidelines, plus your own physician’s report, help us determine if Hamlet House can provide appropriate support for each individual.

Q: How does Hamlet House price compare to off-island rates?
A: Actually, our rates are relatively equal to most adult family homes. Feel free to shop around, but we don’t expect you to get a much better rate elsewhere considering the amount of services that seniors receive at Hamlet House!
